Here’s the first day of DAC, captured in pictures and captions.

Gary Smith introduced a new name for today’s SoC development methodology: “Multi-Platform Based Design.†Some claim this has been going on for years, e.g., at Nokia. I talked about the trend toward FPGA-based prototyping in software development at the Cadence’s EDA360 Theater at DAC. EDA veteran journalist Ed Sperling interviewed Pravin Madhani, P&R at Mentor. Well-know EDA investor George Janac talked about his latest venture – Chip Path – that offers an architectural to implementation (ASIC or FPGA) assembly paradigm to cut design time in half. ARM’s John Heinlein talked about physical IP trends before helping the Chipestimate.com crew (Nichole and Sean) give away prizes to the audience. Solar panels and antenna on the Kisker hybrid. Very cool. Ansoft-Apache Design’s Yukari and Brenda running the controls on the DAC show floor. Gary Dare from Space Co-Design and I talk about the latest trends in ASIC prototyping with FPGAs. Bob Durstenfeld creates an impressive presence for Globalfoundries on the DAC show floor. (Hi Karen!)
